Local Dimming Technology

Local Dimming technology divides the entire LED backlight into several independently controlled blocks. Each block’s LED driving current is automatically adjusted based on the grayscale levels of the displayed image. By adjusting the brightness of each block’s backlight, this technology enhances display contrast and improves image quality. Local Dimming is typically used in direct-lit backlighting systems.

For edge-lit backlighting systems, the brightness of the LED lights is usually adjusted as a whole to enhance image quality or reduce power consumption. This method is known as Global Dimming technology.

The more blocks the backlight is divided into, the better the display effect. The design and division of blocks depend on the arrangement of the LED lights, the efficiency of the backlight driving power supply, and the number of channels supported by the timing controller.
