FSTN Transflective Display Technology

Three design characteristics define the DM-LCD2402-438 module and help engineers evaluate its fit for MCU-based character display products.

FSTN Positive Transflective Mode

The Film Super-Twisted Nematic (FSTN) positive transflective display supports readable character output under ambient light and backlight illumination. The transflective structure uses ambient light in brighter environments and transmits the white LED backlight in lower-light environments.

Character Controller and Font Support

The ST7066U controller supports 5 × 8 and 5 × 11 dot matrix character formats, 4-bit or 8-bit microprocessor interface operation, and CGRAM custom-character creation. For two-line character LCD operation, the controller documentation specifies a 1/16 duty configuration with 5 × 8 dot characters.

6:00 View Direction with 1/16 Duty

The module is specified with a 6:00 viewing direction and 1/16 duty drive. The optical table specifies view angles of 30° top, 60° bottom, 45° left, and 45° right for sample and enclosure viewing-angle review.

Optical and Electrical Performance

The values below provide reference data for contrast review, response-time review, logic-current budgeting, and LED backlight-current budgeting during sample evaluation.

Industry Applications

The DM-LCD2402-438 module can be evaluated for embedded products requiring a wider 24-character line format, 2-line character output, and 6800-series MPU parallel interface.

Industrial Control Panels

For equipment interfaces that need longer 24-character status strings, menu labels, or two-line operating messages within the specified temperature range.

Measurement Instruments

For bench or embedded instruments where MCU-driven character output, low digital operation current, and white LED backlight visibility are required.

MCU-Based Equipment

For embedded designs using a 6800-series MPU parallel interface and ST7066U instruction set in 4-bit or 8-bit communication mode.

Reliability Test Conditions

The test conditions below help engineering teams review environmental tolerance before sample evaluation and product design. Function tests are conducted after 4 hours of storage at normal temperature and humidity after removal from the test chamber.

Engineering Notes

The following items should be reviewed before PCB layout, sample evaluation, and product integration. Confirm final requirements with the datasheet and the DisplayModule team before volume ordering.

Contrast Adjustment

The VO pin requires an external LCD operating-voltage adjustment path. Confirm the target VO setting during sample evaluation because contrast depends on drive condition, temperature, and viewing angle.

Interface Mode Selection

The ST7066U Function Set instruction selects 8-bit or 4-bit MPU interface mode. In 4-bit mode, data is transferred in two nibbles through DB4–DB7.

Backlight Drive

The white LED backlight is connected through pins 15 (A, anode) and 16 (K, cathode). The datasheet specifies 3.5V typical and 32 mA typical, with 40 mA maximum current. Confirm current-limiting requirements for the final circuit.

Initialization Sequence

Follow the instruction-based initialization sequence specified for 8-bit or 4-bit mode. Check the busy flag before sending subsequent instructions when R/W read operation is available; otherwise apply sufficient fixed delays according to instruction timing requirements.

View Direction and Mounting

The module is specified with a 6:00 view direction. Confirm the mounting orientation in the product enclosure to match the intended viewing angle.
